With reference to old european monasteries, we divided the building into two parts: the ceremonial section, for friends and families to say their last goodbyes to the deceased and a section that holds the practical functions like the furnace and office space for the people working there.
We wanted the complex to be an extension of the exsisting recreational area. The site is situated exactly where the larger vegetation fades out into a beachy meadow, with a wonderful view towards the sea at Køge Bugt.
The structure is envisioned built entirely in recycled yellow brick to make a homogenous and somewhat closed exterior surface. On the inside however, the building opens up towards itself, with big open garden spaces that serves as small oasis’s for reflection and remembrance. The yellow brick continues into the interior, where different brick laying techniques highlights the different zones of the complex.
